Anna Rae Gwarjanski is a student at the University of Alabama double majoring in journalism and French with a minor in nutrition. She has articles published on Dateline Alabama, as well and poems and photographs published in Periaktoi, Baylor School’s magazine. She also has a blog, Gwarjanski is from Fort Payne, Alabama, but currently lives in Tuscaloosa. With her journalism, French and nutrition background, she hopes to write or photograph for a travel or food magazine.

She said she loves traveling because being a part of new cultures makes us more compassionate human beings, and it is our purpose as humans to grow as much as we can. Accordingly, she loves food because she said there is no bigger window into a culture’s heartbeat than through its stomach.

Gwarjanski has also been swimming competitively since high school and is captain of UA’s women’s swimming and diving team. Her high school, the Baylor School in Chattanooga, won the National Independent High School Championships in 2009, with her 200 medley relay setting a national record. At Alabama, Gwarjanski is the only person to win the Debra Hobart Perseverance, Determination, and Spirit award two years in a row (2011 and 2012). She is a CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-American, was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, has been named to the Dean’s List (3.5 or better grade point average) for three semesters, and is a member of the honors college.
